internationaal - Engels: wereldhandlesorganisatie. Een organisatie die de handel tussen landen reguleert en liberaliseert. Opgericht in 1995, als opvolger van de GATT, tracht men handelsbarrières weg te nemen, (invoer)tarieven te verlagen, etc. 153 aangesloten landen, 97% van de wereldhandel. Op dit moment ligt het zwaartepunt bij globalisering en het hierin betrekken van de armste landen, met name via de inperking van landbouwsubsidies van de rijkere landen.
De ~ is een intergouvernementele organisatie : de lidstaten dragen hun gezag over aan die organisatie.

internationaal - De wereldhandelsorganisatie, die vanaf 1995 de rol van de GATT heeft overgenomen, gevestigd in Genève. De hoofdfunctie van de WTO is er voor zorg te dragen dat wereldhandelsstromen zo ongestoord mogelijk kunnen verlopen. De besluitvorming binnen de WTO vindt plaats door middel van overleg tussen de lidstaten. Besluiten worden vervolgens ter goedkeuring voorgelegd aan de nationale parlementen.
